Hashimoto’s Disease

Hashimoto’s disease is a prevalent autoimmune disorder, predominantly affecting women at a ratio of 7:1 compared to men. This condition occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, often leading to a delayed diagnosis. Common symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, and hair loss, significantly impacting daily life. Moreover, about 30% to 40% of Hashimoto’s patients experience anxiety and depression.

While the exact causes of Hashimoto’s remain unclear, genetics, environmental factors like pesticides, and infections are believed to play significant roles. It is also more common in individuals with other autoimmune conditions such as celiac disease or Type 1 diabetes.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history review, physical examination, blood tests for thyroid function and antibodies, and often a thyroid ultrasound.

Treatment focuses on maintaining normal thyroid hormone levels, primarily through levothyroxine therapy, adjusted based on ongoing blood tests. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a gluten-free diet and avoiding processed and sugary foods, is crucial in managing the condition.
